One of my favorite things about writing fantasy and science fiction is that I get to make up a lot of cool words and names. Hopefully the meanings of my invented words are explained or inferred from the context of the novels, but for those of you who want to know more, I’ve included these glossaries.

However, I am a stickler for proper pronunciation. You can pronounce my names and words however you want in your own head. But if you’re talking to me and you don't get it right, I’m going to correct you.

This glossary contains names and words from Ten Thousand Gods; Gods of Crystal, Gods of Dreams; Gods in Flux and Flame; Gods of the Singing Sun; and several short stories about the Lalloure.

A

Abyss: The place between dimensions where Valonilyr meets with the Aklakvala.
 
ac.: Abbreviation for after-the-accident. Ertaethans count their years from the time when their world was abandoned by the Shethlandran Company.
 
accident, the: A universal disruption in the time/space continuum which caused captive pocket dimensions to be disengaged from realtime control and reverted to their own time frames.
 
Achleren Rede (ak LAIR en  RAY day): Brother of Sislane Rede Gellis and the Lalloure Rasong. Son of Kaketre and Treisher Rede. A pelitate in the Church of the Child. Achleren prayed for the return of T’loram and accepted M’pelanae H’non’s appearance as that return. Circa 975 to 1033 ac.
 
Adrel and Cend: humans from I’mone who journey to the Collection Clinic in Roblin. The first humans D’lyr collects.
 
Agateth (AG a teth): Lalloure at Jasclarion. One of Heseth H’non’s aides.
 
Aga Twishwell: Owner and manager of Twishwell Bank in Roblin.
 
agricore: A planet used for agriculture.
 
ahmorelles (AH mor els): The Aklakvala’s attending and sensing creatures.
 
ahramelen (ah RAH mah len): A true or entity name.
 
Ahvidyne (AH va dine): Lalloure at Darclonen, one of Jovizher’s aides and a massage therapist.
 
Ahvanine (AH va nine): A southeastern citadel.
 
Airch Klennary (AIRCH KLEN airy): Owner of farm adjoining Rysille’s. Cousin of the Kherlyndirs.
 
Aklakvala (AK lak vah lah): An interdimensional entity who, finding itself lonely after millennia, tried to contact the minds of other beings. The results of this included what it called the “equalization” and what the people of Ertaetha called the “accident.” <See “accident, the”> The Aklakvala caused Vilian Kherlyndir to be born half-human and half-Lalloure.
 
Aklivor (AK li vor): The northern-most citadel under Z’thelle H’non. Walls are covered by mosaics. Hosts winter festivals every other year where the Lalloure and humans from near-by towns build ice castles. Chentoth’s creche citadel.
 
alaxa (ah LAX ah): The excrement of a bird.
 
alcohol: In any form, alcohol is deadly poisonous to Lalloure. The smallest amount causes violent illness and a swallowed mouthful is fatal.
 
Allonae (ah LOW nay): The universe, the continuum; the “all one” or all that is. Lallourean religious beliefs are ones of acceptance, creation of one’s own reality and responsibility for one’s own actions. There is no concept of sin and no division of themselves from the rest of reality. There is no “god” in the sense of a separate being whom they would worship and answer to for their actions. Lalloure accept themselves as an integral part in the totality of the universe.
 
amberite (AM ber ite): A clear, deep golden gemstone usually cut and polished as a cabochon.
 
ambri (AHM bray): A type of spider, the webs of which are used to make silk cloth.
 
amendae (ah MEN day): Lallourean technique of physical rejuvenation.
 
amethryn: A mollusk, the shell of which is used for purple, blue, burgundy and red dye.
 
Andarin (AN da rin): Lalloure at Darclonen. Straight black hair, dark eyes, brown skin. A lab worker. Outgoing, animated. One of Rasong’s and Rhninen’s circle.
 
Anea (ah NAY ah): Human female, Losellein’s little sister.
 
Ahngee (ON jay):  Massage therapist in Cottclif.
 
Antramme (AN tram): A universal language spoken in the majority of pocket dimensions.
 
a’pahra: a heightened erotic state of consciousness between two H’nons, created when they attempt simultaneous collection.
 
Arallen (ARE al en): Human male from a town near the Sohninor citadel. In 943 ac. became Rhninen’s only human lover.
 
arallie (ah RAL ee): A device for playing music recorded on small disks, called dits.
 
arkleberry (ARE kel BEAR ee): A tart cluster fruit which grows on a vine, dark red in color.
 
Arnis (ARE nis): Human female. Investigation team medtech.
 
Artisan: The designation given to a Lalloure whose skill at an art or craft is so valued, the artist itself is considered a treasure to the Lalloure. A Lalloure recommended for Artisan must be well-known in at least six citadels for its art, and its elevation to Artisan must be agreed upon by a majority vote in four citadels. Once voted in, it is given the honorific Rt’san, which like H’non, is placed after its name. A Rt’san may forsake all other work to pursue its art.
 
Ashinol (ASH i nol): Lalloure at Darclonen. Master dyer and printer of silk. A supervisor in the silk dyeing shops.
 
Ashlin (ASH lin): Human female, the child whom the proscribed Lalloure Nindirinin raised as its own.
 
a’song (ah SONG): Crystalline parasites that grow in the caverns beneath Bir Halake. A’songs are luminescent, flower-like, and “sing” in response to Lallourean mindtouch emanations. They only grow on crystal outcroppings and will disintegrate if picked. In reality, the a’songs are the physical manifestation of the Aklakvala in Ertaetha.
 
Ashtaine Di’Vale (ASH tain  di VALE): Human male on Atkith. Rhine’s first assistant, companion and lover.
 
aslis (ah SLIS): An evergreen tree with broad leaves, downward sweeping branches and smooth, white bark. Grows upwards of 100 feet with straight trunks. The grove of trees in the center of Crystling Hall at Bir Halake is aslis.
 
Athanen (ah THAN nen): Lalloure at Bir Halake, Rhendilon’s kamatae, and Rasong’s second Bir Halakean lover. Blond, blue eyes; has each ear pierced three times. A horticulturist and actor. Athanen is well-known for having an outrageous style all its own.
 
Athyllin (ah THIL lin): Lalloure at Hylcyon. Honey-haired, gray eyed lover of Nindirinin who protested its proscribement and went looking for Nindirinin when the proscribed Lalloure’s thirty year sentence was completed.
 
Atkith (AT kith): A technological world which exists in another pocket dimension from Ertaetha. Valonilyr, Rasong and Bredes go there in 1040 ac. to find Rhninen, who has reincarnated into the man Rhine Estar on that world.
 
attendae (ATTEND day): A healing pleasuring. The one trained in attendae turns its own pleasure and sensations into physical and mental healing energy for its lover. This is performed by the lovers of New Talents during the New Talent’s training years, and by primary aides on H’nons to lessen the risk of diffraction.
 
Atter Telch the Third (AT ter  TELSH): Human male. An obnoxious young man who tried to impress Vilian on the coach to Paderbyrn.
 
Avathire H’non (AH vah thire  hah NON): Lalloure at Sohninor. The head of the Sohninorian collective.
 
autowriter: A typewriter, suggested by Bredes in 1047, developed by the Lalloure and introduced to the human population in 1050.
 
Azleric (az LER ic): Lalloure at Rhil Hetre. The head amendae monitor.
 
azurlite (AH zur lite): A blue gemstone, phosphorescent in the presence of heat. Sometimes crushed and added to paint. Anything glazed with this paint will glow in the dark if warmth (such as the touch of a hand) is applied.

Bank of Roblin: Bank in Roblin, Darclonen Province, where Tims and Sare Brikker had accounts.
 
bathingroom: A bathroom.
 
baybens: Weeping bush with dark blue racemes of spicy flowers.
 
b’chiia (bah CHI ah): The dance of longing. A dance with musical accompaniment performed at formal pleasuries to put dancers and audience in an amorous frame of mind. Couples begin by touching hands, spinning away, touching wrists, spinning away, touching forearms, etc., until their bodies are in contact. They then undress one another in tempo with the music and slide to the floor to pleasure. By the time the music stops, most of the audience is likewise engaged.
 
Beauty: Rhninen’s love name for Rasong.
 
Bebeteth (BEB ah teth): Lalloure at Iloloe. One of the three elders who accompany Bredes to Bir Halake.
 
Bedar (BAY darr): Human male, a hardware storekeeper in Roblin.
 
beguilae (bah GILE ay): The dance of arousal. Performed by two or more Lalloure on another individual to build its arousal to a heightened state before pleasuring.
 
Benbe Klicaron (BEN bee  kli KAR on): Human male, Bredes’ father, killed in a landslide before Bredes was born.
 
Benner Stotterly: husband who survived a cascade in 1080 in Netpinny.
 
berriae (BAIR ee ay): A tart fruit drink similar to cranberry juice, consumed either cold or hot.
 
binding rites: Love vows exchanged by Lalloure who have felt themselves to be kamatae, or soulmates. Does not infer sexual exclusivity.
 
birthday castle: A Lallourean birthday dish of dried fruit, nuts, softened grains, honey and spices sculpted and arranged to resemble a fanciful building.
 
birdy: Crazy, stupid, idiotic.
 
Bir Halake (BUR  hah LAK ah): A citadel in the Kerrakken Mountains under M’pelanae H’non, though the elder Noenlen handles administrative duties. The main action of Gods of Crystal, Gods of Dreams takes place here.
 
birth scream: The powerful telepathic scream a new-born Lalloure emits which lasts for around an hour, gradually decreasing in intensity or until adult Lalloure contact its mind and establish rapport.
 
birth snatch: The taking of a newborn Loray from its place of birth with the intent of hiding it from the Lalloure.
 
blacknut: Name of both a tree and its kernel type nut, similar to walnuts but with a smoother shell and meat. Honeyed blacknuts are made by soaking the nuts in honey and spices and then roasting the nut meat. The resulting glazed nut is eaten like candy. A dark, potent wine is also made from the nut kernels.
 
Blacmire (BLAK mire): Rasong’s favorite thorss.
 
B’lia (ba LIE a): Young human girl who lived on the Clouder Estate and found Nindi after it had been stabbed. B’lia brought the darkling woman Faeshin to tend Nindi.
 
bluette: A small brightbird, turquoise blue in color
 
bluehawk: A large brightbird, a raptor which preys on smaller birds. Royal blue, navy blue and white feathers. Similar in size and shape to a redtail hawk.
 
Blueroof Inn: A hotel in the town of D’hanton where Sashenna and Greyen lodge on their visit to see Vilian.
 
bosed (BOSS ed): An animal raised for its fur and skin which is shed yearly and made into pelts, suede or leather depending on the breed. Different breeds grow various kinds of furs and textured skins.
 
bovinen (BO vi nen): A bovine raised for milk and meat.
 
brain burn: The condition resulting from continued Lallourean pain-sending. Repeated forceful pain-sending, as to render a person unconscious, causes swelling and bleeding of the brain. If untreated, the victim can become mentally debilitated or die.
 
Braeley (BRAY lee): Lalloure at Jasclarion. One of Heseth H’non’s aides.
 
Bredes (BRAY dees): MAIN CHARACTER. See Character Portraits page.
 
Bredin Brikker (BRAY din  BRIK er): The name the Lalloure Bredes uses when masquerading as a human male.
 
Brich and Pateece Felding: farming family near Nutermire, Aklivor Province.
 
Bridit DuPane (BRI dit  du PAIN): Human female on Atkith. Executive head and major share holder of Soring Finite; construct engineer. Rhine’s former mentor and the inventor of the drug Dupane and creator of the construct Mohne.
 
brightbird: Wild birds on Ertaetha. Most are brilliantly colored.
 
Briha’Dalinyr (bri HA DAH lin er): Bredes’ true name or ahramalen.
 
Bris: Human male on Atkith. Employee of Estar Entourage.
 
Brissing (BRIS ing): A small town in the southern Kerrakkin Mountains, about seventy-five miles south of Hylcyon. The Lalloure Nindirinin lived there as Nindi Fendlin for nearly ten years, hiding from the memories of its lost past.
 
Brylie Kames: wife of Jaffet, niece-in-law of Gwenlilli.
 
Brythe (BRITH): Loray at Darclonen. Born after Wellowen.
 
busybird: A gossip.
 
C 

Caetha (KAY tha): Elderly human female who cared for Nindirinin after it tried to commit suicide. Nindirinin lived with Caetha for the first eight years of its proscribement.
 
cafeteria lounges: The eating and socializing areas in the inner building of a H’lomae where Lalloure take their meals cafeteria style and meet to talk. Each one contains a kitchen with chillchests, stoves and preparation areas. At Darclonen these lounges are named after brightbirds such as Rittie, Dovesparrow, Bluehawk and Redlark. At Bir Halake they are named for evergreens such as Hololy, Frillie and Aslis.
 
calming: Lallourean mental technique of inducing tranquillity in another Lalloure or human. A pleasant, temporary balance in the receiver is produced.
 
Camard: Town about half-way between Bir Halake and Jasclarion on the Taarae River. Bredes supposedly goes there to appraise thorss stock.
 
Cander Kolis: Rysille Jentylrs’ former husband.
 
cascade: When an entire family dies at the same time for no reason.
 
casting collective: A collective that searches for the mindtouch of another and, when found, mindlocks with it.
 
cedarwing: A large bird of the finch family with rusty red head, wing and tail feathers. Also marked with black and yellow.
 
Cetilien (SET i LEE an): A first Lalloure. The Lalloure who betrayed L’loren.
 
Cetstal (SET stal): A town north of Bir Halake bisected by the Webbyn River. When a flood washed out its only bridge, Rasong, Bredes and Valonilyr had to climb into the mountains on their journey to find the flyer.
 
Chaelar (CHAY lar): Lalloure at Darclonen, creche companion and one of Wellowen’s first year guardians.
 
charm: Infatuation or fascination.
 
charm hot: To excite sexually.
 
charm-sickness: A state which sometimes occurs during Lallourean firsthralls, characterized by violent, obsessive sexual activity.
 
Chasily Serrit (CHAZ i lee  SAIR it): Human female on Atkith. Mother of Dinivon. Rhine’s first executive and younger sister. Chasily mistook Rasong for Ashtaine at Rhine’s revel, thus inadvertently setting Rasong up to be taken to Shinshininear. Blue hair.
 
Chennen (CHEN nen): One of the original Lalloure. Lover, ‘husband’ and kamatae of L’loren, the First Lalloure. Chennen grew up in a house full of brothers and was raised as a boy. Easy going and laid-back, Chennen also possessed a wonderful sense of humor. Circa 3 ac. to 399 ac. See Character Portraits page.
 
Chennen’s Love: A Lallourean late summer holiday which honors L’loren, the First Lalloure. First of Ninth Month.
 
cheenaberry bush: A low shrub which produces small, succulent yellow berries, similar to currents.
 
Chentoth (CHEN toth): The Loray born to Pahrae Y’lendro whom Vitkynin of Iloloe individually guardians for a year. Though blind from birth, Chentoth grows up to be a visionary of unparalleled caliber. Red-blond hair, pale blue eyes.
 
Chezienne (CHEZ ee en): Lalloure at Rhil Hetre. Head of the print shops.
 
chillchest: A storage chest for perishable foods kept cool by cold water. In a citadel the chillchests are double-walled with running water constantly flowing between the walls, the outer one insulated, the inner one conductive. One cold spring flowing in a pipe under the floor bathes all the chillchests in the cafeteria lounges.
 
chirpy: Any small bird.
 
Chizra D’Arclon (CHIZ ra  dah ARK lon): One of the original Lalloure whose leadership helped establish Darclonen.
 
Church of the Child: A human religion that worships the Lalloure as an angelic intermediary, believing them to be immortal, without sexual desire, and able to intervene for humans with the One. Members of the Church are usually close relatives of Lalloure, such as parents or siblings. While not a popular Ertaethan religion, there is usually a Church of the Child near each citadel. The Lalloure ignore its existence.
 
cinnaheart: The aromatic bark of the cinnaheart tree. Used as a spice. Similar to cinnamon but stronger.
 
circle: (1) A Lallourean group of lovers. Average size ten to thirty individuals who pleasure regularly with one another. (2) A small group of Lalloure mentally focused on a particular task but not joined nor under the direction of a H’non. Example: healing circle.
 
Circlet Gardens: A series of large, circular gardens at Jasclarion.
 
circuits: A series of underground conduits in a Company Center which originally connected the energy grid at the center with the perimeter wall. When the Centers were taken over by the Lalloure, the circuits were used for storing discarded furniture and useless electronics, then closed off and forgotten. At Bir Halake, the circuits were cleaned out, tiled and used to connect H’lomae with the other buildings in the citadel. Raised colored tiles at chest level indicate where a specific circuit leads (green to solar houses, red to barns, yellow to labs, violet to Hollow Hall, gold to L’loren’s Veil). Tiles painted with white arrows jut even further out along this line of colored tiles. These arrows always point toward H’lomae and are painted with azulite paint. Even if the circuit is dark, one can determine one’s direction by finding these highest tiles and touching them.
 
citadel: Company Centers of the Shethlandran Company now used as Lallourean homes. Fourteen in existence. Much of the original layout remains the same.
 
Claas Kherlyndir (CLAS kair LIN der): A farmer in the Darclonen Province. Husband of Sashenna, father to Vilian, Greyen and Kett.
 
Claren Klennary: wife of Airch, mother of Erian.
 
Clearinghouse: The retail and wholesale store where a citadel’s main product (cloth, mined crystals, glass, etc.) is sold to humans.
 
clothier: One who constructs clothing.
 
clover: A paid sexual companion. Male and female prostitution is legal on Ertaetha. Clovers are also trained in therapeutic massage.
 
clovering: to engage in a paid sexual encounter.
 
C’parr (sih PARR): Lalloure at K’kessinair. Sandy-haired actor who was present the evening of Rhninen’s first pleasuring.
 
C’pethae (sah PETH ay): Lallourean character in a story Vilian read to Rasong during its recuperation from burns.
 
colding love: Lallourean expression for “unlove.” When a Lalloure is in love with another who does not return its love, it is said the affectionless one gives it “colding love.”
 
collection: Usually “Loray collection.” The taking of a one-year-old Lallourean infant from its human parents by the Lalloure.
 
collective: The massing of Lallourean minds into a single, powerful unit by a H’non. Collectives are mainly used for communication between citadels.
 
colots: Small, ground hugging spring flowers in varying pastel colors, purple, pink, yellow, etc.
 
console: A computer.
 
Cottclif: Village a mile from the Kherlyndir farm in the northern Darclonen Province.
 
Cottclif Call: Monthly newspaper published by Jaffet and Brylie Kames in Cottclif.
 
Couches, the: A series of wide, cushioned steps along one wall of Glaceglitter Hall in Bir Halake used by the Lalloure for pleasuries.
 
Courtesy: The opening of a citadel to the human population once every two years for three consecutive days, usually the middle of Seventh Month.
 
cradledrop: An herb having a raceme of tiny fragrant, oval flowers, white or pink in color.
 
cran ale: A sweet beer.
 
creche: The nursery in a citadel where Lallourean children live until their middle or late teens.
 
creche citadel: A Lalloure’s first H’lomae citadel and the one with which it is always identified, even if it lives at other citadels during its life. (Example: Folande of Hylcyon from Darclonen).
 
creche companion: A Lalloure who lives in the creche, teaches and cares for Lorays.
 
Crechelle (CRESH el): A silver silkit cat, M’pelanae H’non’s pet.
 
crechemates: Lalloure who were children in the creche at the same time.
 
Crismy (KRIZ mee): Large seaport town five miles east of Periclath. Tymes and Sare Brikker lived there while Bredes lived at Periclath from 1030 to 1033 ac.
 
crispbark tree: A tree with dark purplish green leaves and bark which flakes off in thin crispy curls. When toasted and seasoned these bark curls are used as a novelty foodstuff. The curls can also be eaten raw but they are rather rubbery and chewy.
 
crispnut: The nut of the crispbark tree. Under a smooth outer skin is a firm, white nutmeat similar in texture and taste to a water chestnut.
 
Crystling Hall: The garden park under Bir Halake’s dome, filled with bushes, small trees, flowers and crystal sculptures.
 
C’sirik (SIS er ik): A western citadel under E’petae H’non. Jynairdileon H’non assumed the Collective in 1040 ac. after E’petae died.
 
cultured grass: A specially developed lawn grass which grows to a uniform three inch height and never needs mowing or trimming. By the use of boundary chemicals, the grass will grow within defined perimeters and no further. Reproduces by root runners and grows so thick, it chokes out any competing plant or weed.
 
curia of elders: A council within a citadel made up of Lalloure over the age of 300. The curia meets once a week and advises the H’non on problems and questions which arise. The curia can overturn a H’non’s decision on any matter by a 2/3 vote.
 
C’yllyn (SEE ill en): Lalloure at Darclonen. Jovizher H’non’s primary aide. Pale red-blond hair, dark blue eyes.
 
D 

Daela (DAY lah: The name the Lalloure D’lyr uses when masquerading as a human female. As D’lyr is tiny, the alias is a child of about ten.
 
Daethri (DAY three): Lalloure at Darclonen several centuries ago. The master weaver when Lhro came to Darclonen to pursue weaving.
 
Dahl (DAL): Human female from the realtime. A courier between Bredes and the outpost.
 
Dakin Resh (DAY kin  RESH): Human male. A Senior Tech from realtime.
 
D’Arclon Hall (dah ARK lon): The largest auditorium in Darclonen, capable of seating 1,000 people. Used for the daily collectives.
 
Darclonen (dar KLO nen): A citadel near the middle of Ertaetha under Lhro H’non until 1040 ac., then under Jovizher H’non. Rasong’s creche citadel. Chizra D’Arclon was one of the original Lalloure and was the Lalloure for whom Darclonen was named. The main action of Ten Thousand Gods takes place at Darclonen.
 
Darivae Hedmerk (DAR ih vay  HED merk): M’pelanae’s mother.
 
darkling: An herbalist. The profession is practiced by women and men. The word sometimes alludes to the practice of “magic” and is used in place of wizard or witch.
 
datage disk: A data storage disk.
 
Daydra (DAY dra): Vilian’s cat.
 
death collective: A collective used to kill.
 
Degirés (dah GIR ees): Cottclif family who own a small fabric and sundries shop.
 
Delline (DEL leen): Female character in a play.
 
Dendle: Vitkynin’s thorss.
 
Denn: Human male, one of the thugs Querral Clouder hired to help him break into Nindi Fendlin’s house.
 
Dered (DARE ed): Loray at Darclonen. Light, wavy brown hair, hazel eyes.
 
Dezdellen H’non (DEZ del en  hah NON): Lalloure at Periclath, head of the Periclath Collective. Rasong pleasured with it one time.
 
D’hanton (dah HAN ton): Large town in the valley east of Bir Halake, directly at the bottom of the mountain from the citadel. Several serpentine roads connect it with the top of the mountain. On foot it takes an hour to climb from D’hanton to Bir Halake; on thorss, twenty to thirty minutes.
 
diffract: To have one’s mind burn out by overuse of one’s telepathic abilities. This is extremely rare. The most famous diffracted Lalloure was Lansitin H’non who overextended its Talent and destroyed its conscious brain. <See Lansitin H’non>
 
Dinivon Serrit (DIH ni von  SAIR it): Human female on Atkith. Developed a severe crush on Valonilyr. Rhine’s niece and Chasily’s daughter. Burgundy hair and brown eyes.
 
dit: A small disk for recording and playing music.
 
Divad (DIH vid): Human male on Atkith. One of Rhine’s costume designer/creators.
 
D’lyr (dah LEAR): Lalloure at Darclonen. A head seamer in the clothier shop, then head of the weaving shops in 1041. Born 790 ac. near Periclath. Diminutive (about 3’8” tall) with hip-length wavy blond hair, blue eyes. Part of Rasong’s circle. Has a nurturing nature.
 
D’merr (dah MER): Lalloure at Aklivor. A New Talent.
 
D’nerae Rt’san (dah NAIR ay RIT san): artisan chef and head of the kitchens and cafeterias at Rhil Hetre.
 
dormitory: The outer-most building of a Lallourean H’lomae. Circular, four stories high and 50 feet wide, containing sleeping rooms (each with a private bathingroom), and small lounges. Brick or stone construction, large windows and arched outer doorways. When they were Company Centers, the dormitories were used as living areas for Company personnel, and hotels for field agents who came in for R&R.
 
dovesparrow: A brightbird, brown, lavender and metallic gold in color. Similar to a dove in size and shape but with a liquid, singing voice. Often kept as a pet.
 
drauge: A derogatory term for a Lalloure, a slang form of “androgynous.” Lalloure occasionally use the term for themselves in a humorous fashion.
 
dreitze (DRY tza): Fine, light, dry snow accompanied by high winds.
 
Drelee (DREE lee): Lalloure at Darclonen. A shop worker. Rhninen thought it had terrible handwriting.

dribbleberry: A tart, stringent thin skinned amber berry. The dribbleberry blooms in fall, sets its fruit before the first frost and ripens in the spring.

elderlove: A love name for an older lover.
 
Elin Bernlore (EE lin  BURN lor): Kett Kherlyndir’s wife, sister-in-law of Vilian.
 
Elynza (ah LIN za): Lalloure at Darclonen. The Province Assembly member Rasong replaces.
 
endday: The last day of the week, a day of rest.
 
E’petae H’non (eh PET tay  hah NON): Head of the C’sirikean Collective until its death in 1040 ac.
 
Ephiny (EE fin ee): Lalloure at Rhil Hetre. A pithrie planter.
 
Erian Klennary: Rysille’s cousin on the farm adjoining hers.
 
Ertaetha (er TAY tha): An intradworld owned and developed by the Shethlandran Company as an agricultural planet. Named for the largest shareholder’s daughter. Legal classification: INDW.6951. The only planet in the known universes where Lalloure exist.
 
Essene Clouder (ES seen  CLOW der): Human female, distant cousin and wife of Querral Clouder who could bear him no children.
 
Estegana (ES tah GAH nah): Lalloure at Darclonen. A carpenter. Tall (6’5”) with solid muscles, curly, sandy brown hair and blue eyes.
 
Etelen (ET tah len): Lalloure at Jasclarion. One of the charm-sick Lalloure in Sablesilk Lounge the evening Bredes goes there.
 
extrinsic H’non: A H’non who is not head of a citadel. These “free-agent” H’nons travel between citadels every few years to assist and relieve the resident H’nons. If a resident H’non is injured or incapacitated, an extrinsic is dispatched to fulfill its duties. An extrinsic can become a resident H’non if the resident dies and there is no New Talent to take its place.
 
Ezoset (eh ZO set): Human male, the father of L’loren, the First Lalloure.
 
F 

Faeshin (FAY shin): Human female, a darkling woman at the Clouder Estate who befriended Nindi Fendlin and taught Nindi about the darkling profession. Faeshin also tended Nindi and discovered what it was after it was stabbed by Geg.
 
Fairforest Hall: The garden-park under Darclonen’s dome, filled with trees, flowers, lawns, pools for swimming, and waterfalls. Rasong and Rhninen met and later shared the binding rite in Fairforest Hall.
 
Fairplain: A moderately sized town eighty miles north of Greening-on-the-Shore (about half-way between Hylcyon and Rhil Hetre) where Querral Clouder took the kidnapped Ashlin.
 
fairy dove: A brightbird, similar to a fairy tern, with iridescent white feathers which seem transparent in the sunshine.
 
fat-hen: Ertaethan version of the chicken. Larger and meatier, but no power of flight. Egg-laying fat-hens have dual oviducts and produce six to ten eggs a day.
 
fey: Homosexual.
 
Fialonshir (FEE al ON shir): Northeastern citadel under Pirishyn H’non. L’loren and Chennen’s creche citadel. Fialonshir looks somewhat like a medieval castle and is a shrine to the Lalloure. It contains Philadrienne Hall, a memorial hall/museum of L’loren and other first Lalloure. Fialonshir’s products are honey, wax and feather products.
 
filcliel (FILK lee el): A fantasy creature, a thorss with wings.
 
fireflit: A kind of firefly. The fireflit is larger and glows white, yellow or blue, depending on its type.
 
firsthralls: The beginning of an intense Lallourean sexual relationship. Those weeks or months when new lovers are often exclusive and insatiable with one another.
 
firstlove: A Lalloure’s first lover, the one who initiates it into Lallourean sexual adulthood.
 
first schism: The euphemism given to the first series of Lallourean/human conflicts which resulted in the two races drawing apart and living in totally separate cultures.
 
fizzie: Carbonated non-alcoholic drink.
 
flamehawk: A large, bright red and white raptor which preys on smaller birds and reptiles. Similar in size to a bald eagle.
 
Flashfalls Hall: The park under Rhil Hetre’s central H’lomae dome that opens up into the gardened grotto and lakeway beneath. Six streams wind through Flashfalls, disappearing underground to resurface as waterfalls over the precipice of the grotto.
 
fleshflare: A Lallourean pleasuring for physical gratification. A sharing of bodies and sensations with no deep affection involved. Also called a mounding.
 
Flornn, Dr.: doctor in D’hanton, one of Gwenlilli’s regular correspondents.
 
Florinini, Taza and Saza: Twin aunts of Keese, Kile and Trave Sutker who live in Prydde.
 
flutter: A butterfly. Usually brightly colored with iridescent and/or metallic wings.
 
flyer: A wingless hovercraft from the realtime universe.
 
F’lynler (fah LIN lir): Lalloure at Rhil Hetre. Jyn H’non’s aide.
 
Folande (fo LAN dah): Elderly Lalloure at Darclonen, born 377 ac. near Hylcyon. Creche companion, counselor and author of numerous books including L’loren and Chennen, The Love and the Struggle. Folande was Lhro’s lover and kamatae for centuries and was the first to suspect that Lhro had the H’non Talent. Folande counseled Rhninen when it came to Darclonen in 1006 ac. and later talked to Rasong after it first discovered Vilian’s abilities. White hair, brown eyes. Circa 377 ac. to 1033 ac.
 
Folto (FOL toe): Human male, employed at the Clearinghouse in Roblin. A hefty, lank-haired excitable man. Losellein’s father.
 
Fosh: Human female, a set designer from the Pandemonium Theatre in Roblin.
 
Freling (FRAY ling): Lalloure at Bir Halake. A dark-haired former miner who headed one of the search parties when M’pelanae H’non disappeared.
 
frillie bush: A bush which grows in an interwoven, somewhat basket weave type branch pattern. An evergreen, the leaves of which are thick and tufted. The frillie bush grows in every part of Ertaetha and is a good natural shelter from the elements. It was, in fact, genetically engineered for the planet for that purpose.
 
Frosticles: Rysille’s black and white male cat.
 
funerairium: human mortuary and funeral home.
 
G 

Gaeyshen (GAY shen): Lalloure at Hylcyon. Dark skinned, black- haired carpenter who fought with Nindirinin and fell from the roof of the dormitory to its death.
 
gemstone lounges: Pleasuring lounges at Bir Halake, named after various precious or semi-precious gems: Amberite Lounge.
 
g’dlady: Goodlady. Formal human title of respect used in place of ma’am, mistress (mrs.) or miss for a woman.
 
g’dman: Goodman. Formal human title of respect used in place of mister for a man.
 
Geg: Human male, one of the thugs Querral Clouder hired to help him break into Nindi Fendlin’s house. Geg tried to rape Nindi and, upon discovering it was Lalloure, stabbed it instead.
 
gemfire: A stoneware or porcelain glaze of various crushed crystals which, when fired, creates a glittering finish.
 
Gense: A city in the Northern Tropola of Atkith where Rasong, Valonilyr and Bredes first land on the planet. The home of Kolt and Styrrie.
 
Gethana (geth AN nah): Human female. Silk merchant on the plaza in Roblin who supposedly introduced Vilian to Rhoz Lallen.
 
Gicheni (gih CHEN nee): Lalloure at Aklivor. An elder, one of Vitkynin’s kamataes.
 
gillylion: A bright yellow flower with long, thin steamer petals that resemble hair.
 
Gilpie: A merman construct on Atkith. Gilpie is about 10” in length with long, ink-black hair and webbing between its elongated fingers. Golden scales edged in black cover its body and tail.
 
Glaceglitter Hall: A large, 3 story high lounge at the northern cut-off end of Bir Halake’s H’lomae dormitory. Twelve 35-ft. high colored glass windows make up the wall which faces the Overlook courtyard. Glaceglitter also contains a crystal sculpture fountain, three pools for swimming, a buffet, a stage, the Couches and M’pelanae H’non’s “Throne.”

glisberry: A firm red berry fruit, similar to a strawberry.
 
G’lyning (gah LIN ing): Lalloure at Bir Halake. A blond actor.
 
Glyniri (glih NIR ee): Loray at Bir Halake. One of only two Lorays in the creche when Vilian goes there to study. Born 1030 ac. Blond, blue eyes.
 
good father: Lallourean honorific for human men.
 
good mother: Lallourean honorific for human women.
 
goodlies: Pastries such as small cakes, cookies and sweet biscuits.
 
greatree: A large, full-branched tree, similar to an oak.
 
Greening-on-the-Shore: Large sea-port city fifty miles west of Hylcyon. The proscribed Lalloure Nindirinin lived in or near it for thirteen years.
 
Grelefeld (GREL ah feld): Large town fifteen miles south of the Kherlyndir family farm.
 
Grelefeld Grand: Well-appointed hotel on the Grelefeld plaza.
 
Greyen Kherlyndir (GRAY en  kair LIN der): Vilian’s brother, middle child of the Kherlyndir family. As a young artist, his work so impressed Rasong that the Lalloure recommended him for apprenticeship at the studio of Talanae Pothe in Paderbyrn. He went there in 1023 ac. at age sixteen where he apprenticed under the well-known artist and also learned to accept his homosexuality. Even though his own sexual orientation was different, Greyen had trouble accepting Vilian’s relationship, both mental and physical, with Rasong. Nicknamed “Grey.” Dark blond hair, brown eyes.
 
grog: A frog-like amphibian. Purple and green in color
 
G’tita (gah TEA tah): The white thorss Bredes rode to Sweetwell for the Loray collection.
 
guardian: A Lalloure who keeps in constant mental rapport with an infant Loray during the Loray’s first year while it lives with its human parents.
 
Gwenlilli Sarrine Kames, Dr.: Born 23rd of First Month, 1032, D’hanton, Bir Halake Province and died 7th of Fifth Month, 1127, The Singing Sun. Doctor in Cottclif who collects cascades research. Mid-sixties, tall, thin, short gray hair.
 
G’wirel (gah WIR el): Lalloure at Iloloe. One of the three elders who accompany Bredes to Bir Halake.

Haetha K’lessin (HAY tha  kah LESS in): Human female, Rhninen’s mother, wife of Konder. A no-nonsense farm wife in the K’kessinair Province.
 
Hambler Commodities Store: general store in Nutermire.
 
handbow: A small, one-handed crossbow which shoots a single dart. Used mainly to hunt birds and lizards, also occasionally as a personal weapon.
 
Harvest Hall: A Lallourean fall harvest holiday which takes place on the 25th of Tenth Month. A thanksgiving.
 
Hashiliiad (HASH ih LEE id): Human female on Atkith. A crooning singer, one of Bridit DuPane’s protēgēs. Bridit provided Hashiliiad with Dupane in violation of Bridit’s contract with Rhine and Rhine sued. Hashiliiad asked Rhine to drop the suit but he refused. Ashtaine killed Hashiliiad to prevent her from harming Rhine.
 
healing circle: Lallourean mental technique used to provide energy to a severely injured or ill Lalloure.
 
Heartfire: A Lallourean winter holiday which takes place on the 18th of Second Month. A day of pleasuries and presents.
 
Herisa (HAIR ee sah): female alias of H’zlorinin of Periclath.
 
Heseth H’non (HAY seth  hah NON): Lalloure at Jasclarion, head of the Jasclarion Collective. Dark hair streaked with white.
 
H’Eshli (hah EESH lee): Lalloure at Bir Halake. One of Noenlen’s administrative aides.
 
Heztet, Tieblin and Karkol (TEA blin and KAR kol  HEZ tet): Mayor of Grelefeld and her husband.
 
H’harl (hah HARL): A huge polished crystal in the center of the aslis grove in Crystling Hall at Bir Halake. Four feet by three feet in an uneven ovoid shape, the H’harl is filled with gold inclusions, jagged purple lines and specks of opalescent color. A legend surrounds the H’harl of Bir Halake: it is said if one looks into it while in a state of deep meditation, one can find the answers to troubling questions.
 
hig: Huge Ertaethan meat animals, weighing several tons. They are worm-like with no legs, obedient but with little intelligence. Meat is harvested from the hig’s back and sides where it grows like thick scales. These scales are easily plucked off when mature, causing the animal no pain. Different breeds of hig produce various kinds of meat flavors.
 
Hirlaken Hall (her LAK en): Largest auditorium in Bir Halake, capable of seating 1,000 people. Used for the daily collectives. Named for Redburd Hirlaken, the Lalloure who founded Bir Halake.
 
H’kliv (hih KLIV): Lalloure at Hylcyon. Nindirinin was once in firsthralls with it.
 
H’non (hah NON): Honorific given to those Lalloure who possess the rare Talent of being able to collect or mass hundreds of Lallourean minds into a unit and direct that unit to a specific purpose. The honorific is placed after the name.
 
H’lomae (hah LOW may): The Lallourean “Home of Love.” The central circular building in each citadel where Lalloure eat, sleep, work and socialize. Comprised of three parts: 1) A circular, four story dormitory which contains sleeping rooms and small lounges. 2) An inner building which houses large lounges for eating and socializing, libraries, offices, auditoriums and workshops for sewing, weaving, and other hand crafts. As it is sandwiched between the dormitory and the dome, this central building has no windows and relies on its skylights for light. 3) In the very center is a garden park covered by a dome of impervious polyplaztin between stetsteel struts.
 
hololy (ho LOW lee): An evergreen tree with leaves similar to a holly. Flowers in summer with large, bright blue blooms.
 
honeyhart: a honey producing bird; metallic gold feathers with blue and purple caps and wing tips. Sparrow-size, long narrow beak, produces wax from under its tail feathers which it blows into bubbles, attaches in the hollows of trees and fills with flower nectar which it has processed in glands along the sides of its mouth. In a symbiotic relationship with the jewelhummer, which fans the nectar, evaporating the moisture and creating honey. The jewelhummers eat discarded wax and some honey.
 
Honnee Wever (hawn EE  WEV er): Human female on Atkith. Mother of Phellen and Rhine’s private medtek. Honee befriended Rasong, Bredes and Valonilyr when they arrived at Shinshininear. Honee conspired with Bridit DuPane to find out more about the Lalloure. Dark skin and black hair.
 
Hopperleaf: An insect similar to a grasshopper.
 
Hylcyon (HILL see on): A southern citadel under Seklaran H’non. Folande’s creche citadel. The Lalloure Nindirinin was living at Hylcyon when it was proscribed.
 
H’zlorinin (HEZ lore in en): Lalloure from Darclonen who meets Rasong, Bredes and Valonilyr at the Roundfire Inn and spends a night pleasuring with them. Born 1060, age 36.

Ifethad (ih FETH ed): Lalloure at Bir Halake. A miner and craftsman of fine jewelry.
 
Ikeva (eye KEE vah): Human female on Atkith. One of Honee’s medical medsists.
 
Iloloe (EYE low low): A northwestern citadel under M’kiria H’non.
 
Indoft Clouder (IN doft  CLOW der): Human male, a merchant in the sea-port town of Greening-on-the-Shore. Nindirinin was hired as a staff weaver for his household.
 
Instone: A town at the base of the Kerrakkin Mountains near the Shennen River.
 
Instone Hotel: A hotel in the town of Instone where Rasong, Valonilyr and Bredes spend a rainy night on their trip north.
 
intradworld: Intra-dimensional world, a world which exists in a pocket dimension.
 
irhys (EYE rise): Red and blue stalk flowers, similar to iris.
 
ironreed: A stiff but flexible reedy plant used for boning and stiffening.
 
Ishynn H’non (ih SHIN  hah NON): An extrinsic H’non until it became head of the Rhil Hetrean Collective in 1040. Ishynn took over for M’pelanae H’non at Bir Halake after M’pelanae diffracted in 1033, and led the inquiry into Rasong’s, Bredes’ and Valonilyr’s actions which led to that diffraction. Fawn-colored hair, dark eyebrows, large dark eyes.

Jynairdileon H’non (gin AIR dih LEE on  hah NON): Lalloure at Rhil Hetre, tall, jovial and boisterous. Head of the Rhil Hetre Collective until 1040 ac. Assumed the C’sirikean Collective in 1040 after E’petae H’non’s death. As its given name is so long, Jynairdileon is normally called Jyn.

Kaesin (KAY sin): Human male. Slim, with dark blond hair and a mustache. A jewel thief who pursued Losellein and became Losellein’s first human lover.
 
Kaketre Rede (kah KET trah  RAY day): Human female, Rasong’s mother who lived in Sweetwell. Circa 949 to 1019 ac.
 
Kakkak-al-el (KAH kack AL el): Keese’s and Kile’s true name or ahramelen.

kavala cream: A hair ointment made from the milky, rendered sap of the kavelle plant. Used as a de-tangler after shampooing.

Kett Kherlyndir (KET  kair LIN der): Vilian’s brother, the eldest Kherlyndir child. Married to Elin Bernlore. Has a daughter and two sons. The daughter was named Rysille Vilianne to honor her aunt.

Ladiwynd Pass (LAY dee wind): A pass in the Kerrakkin Mountains between Iloloe and Aklivor.
 
Lahlorelandrilyr: L’loren’s ahramelen.
 
Lallalennen (lah LAL len en): A southern citadel under Wiloven H’non.
 
Lalloure (lah LORE ay): The neuter off-spring of humans on Ertaetha. Communicative telepaths but only between themselves. Often live for six centuries or more.
 
lambsilk: A woven napped cloth of wool and silk used for lightweight yet incredibly warm, soft blankets. Only the first shedding of shepp lambs is used for true lambsilk although the term applies to any lambswool and silk cloth.
 
Lansitin H’non (LAN sih tin  hah NON): Lalloure at V’Onalyrin, circa 35 ac. to 181 ac. Lansitin manifested when it was 132 years old (167 ac.) and became the H’non of V’Onalyrin in 176 ac. But Lansitin over-extended itself and diffracted in 180 ac., burning out portions of its brain. Left a mental vegetable, Lansitin’s Talent pulsed in regular, painful spurts unless the H’non was kept unconscious. Lansitin was euthanized in 181 ac. by L’loren after it was determined the H’non would never recover. This caused the dissolution of the V’Onalyrin citadel and the incident came to be called the Tragedy of Lansitin H’non. Straight black hair, pale skin, pale blue eyes similar to Rasong’s.
 
lastlock: The lock of hair a Lalloure who intends to commit suicide cuts from its own head and leaves for its lover(s) to find after its death.
 
Ledd: A bird construct on Atkith, constructed mostly of dense minerals. (Does not fly.) Kolt’s pet.
 
legaleasy: A lawyer.
 
lemonen: A lemony citrus drink, sometimes spiced, imbibed either hot or cold.
 
lendils: brown lentils, only larger.
 
L’donlae (lah DON lay): Lalloure at K’kessinair. An architect in the labs, also an actor and director by hobby. Flamboyant and dramatic personality. L’donlae became Rhninen’s firstlove in 904 ac. when it was about 115 years old. L’donlae was also one of the reasons Rhninen left K’kessinair in 943 ac. when it and Rhninen had a violent falling out. Nearly albino, L’donlae has white blond hair, white skin and grass green eyes.
 
Lhro H’non (lah ROW  hah NON): Lalloure at Darclonen, head of the Darclonen Collective, born near Rhil Hetre. Lhro came to Darclonen in 561 ac. when it was 90 to refine its weaving skills. Here it met Folande and they became lovers. Folande began to suspect Lhro had the Talent when Lhro was 139 and began to experience headaches after the daily collective. Folande recommended Lhro for testing. Lhro resented Folande for years over this, although neither of them had a choice in the matter. After apprenticeship under Sitennare H’non, Lhro became the H’non of Darclonen in 622 ac. at age 151. As a traditionalist Lhro had difficulty accepting Vilian’s Lallourean abilities, and banished her from Darclonen in 1033 once Rasong recovered from its burn injuries. The H’non has waist-length straight white hair, dark bushy eyebrows and dark brown eyes. Circa 471 to 1040 ac.
 
Licy (LISS ee): Human male on Atkith. A hair designer.
 
Light Eyes: The humans’ nickname for Rasong.
 
Lim: Human male on Atkith. A whan who befriends Rasong at Rhine’s revel.
 
linder (LIN der): A lap-held stringed instrument similar to a dulcimer and played by strumming or with finger picks. Rhninen was an accomplished linderist.
 
Lis and Nirem Tutten: middle age couple from Cottclif who experience proximity sensing.
 
Liselle (lih SELL): The name the Lalloure Losellein uses when masquerading as a human female.
 
Litian (lih TEA an): the smaller Ertaethan moon.
 
Little Lion: Rasong’s love name for Vilian.
 
L’loren (lah LORE en): The First Lalloure. The first neuter human mutant born on Ertaetha. L’loren, a powerful telepath, was instrumental in finding and establishing communications with other Lalloure and reorganizing Ertaetha after the accident. Lover, kamatae and ‘wife’ of Chennen. Circa 1 ac. to 258 ac. See Character Portraits page.
 
L’loren’s Veil: A shrine at Bir Halake built to house L’loren’s bridal headpiece. The headpiece itself, a golden diadem set with saffienes, is also called L’loren’s Veil. (The blue silk veil which was attached to the diadem crumbled to dust sometime in the first century.) The shrine was built between 469 ac. and 475 ac.
 
Lluma (LOO mah): the larger Ertaethan moon.
 
L’lynsif (lah LIN siff): Lalloure at Jasclarion. The amendae monitor and counselor who befriends Bredes. (Name is an anagram of mine. Since this is the Lalloure who introduces both Bredes and the reader to the Lallourean world, I figured it was appropriate.)
 
loat: heartier, more protein dense version of the oat grain.
 
loatmeal: similar to oatmeal.
 
lollysprite: fairy creature, brightly colored.
 
Loray (LORE ay): A young Lalloure, infant to teenager. Also the name humans use to refer to their Lallourean children.
 
Losellein (LOZ el leen): Lalloure at Darclonen. A clothier and clothes designer, born 1008 ac. Exceptionally beautiful, even by Lallourean standards, Losellein has curly blue-black hair, dark brown eyes, fair skin and full lips. Losellein loves to be wooed and delights in playing a teasing game with potential lovers.
 
lovelock: A piece of hair, usually braided, taken from a Lalloure who has died and kept by its lover in remembrance. Also the braids of hair exchanged by Lalloure who engage in binding rites.
 
Lovilyre Hall (LOV ih liar): The garden-park under Jasclarion’s dome, filled with tiered greenery, whimsical glass arches, pools, flowers, trees and streams.
 
lovlance: A bright yellow flower with a long golden throat, similar to a slender lily on a long stalk.
 
Loxleri (LOX ler ee): Lalloure at Bir Halake, one of M’pelanae H’non’s aides. An elder about 325 years old with light brown hair and blue-gray eyes.
 
L’thean (lih THEE an): honorific given a Lalloure who has been named Learned.
 
Lycurn Gellis (lih KURN  GEL is): Human male, employed at the Bir Halake Clearinghouse in D’hanton. Married to Rasong’s sister Sislane. The father of Kundel.
 
lyrille (lear EE el): A flowering tree with several slender trunks twisting together and spreading into serpentine branches. The lavender or blue flowers hang in thick bunches like clusters of grapes. Very similar to a wisteria.
 
Lystashae H’non (LIS tih shay  hah NON): Lalloure at Fialonshir. An extrinsic H’non.
 
M 

mainz: Large, planet-covering computers used for the maintenance of windows between the realtime universe and captured pocket dimensions.
 
marbline: A rock similar to marble, with a glittering white, blue, pink or lavender mottled surface. Used for statuary, building, paving, etc.
 
Martine pass: A pass in the Kerrakkin Mountains ten miles south of Bir Halake and D’hanton.
 
medtech: A medical technician, a doctor.
 
Mellerd (mel ERD): Human male. Window tech at the outpost.
 
M’Endra (mih EN drah): Lalloure at Darclonen. A rather cranky Loray in the creche during one of Rasong’s infrequent visits. Red hair, blue eyes.
 
Meriel Fahthar (MARE ee el  FAH thar): Human woman at the outpost. A psychologist from realtime. Bredes had a charm for her but was never able to do anything about it. She married the medtek Jeshar.
 
mesmerist: a person who mesmerizes, a hypnotist.
 
M’harag (mah HAR ag): Lalloure at Darclonen, a member of the Darclonen Province Assembly.
 
midday: The noon meal, lunch.
 
Mihenni Groshob Serrit (mih HEN ee  GROSS hob  SAIR it): Rhine Estar’s birth name.
 
Millennium Memory: The celebration which took place in 1000 ac. to commemorate 1,000 years of Lallourean existence. Lalloure visited their creche citadels during the year and special ceremonies were held. (Chennen’s Love was an especially elaborate celebration that year.) Arrangements were made so H’nons could travel to their creche citadels if they so desired.
 
Mindri (MIN dree): Human female, an artist and secretary/ housekeeper at the Pothe studio. Talanae Pothe’s lover. Nicknamed “Minn.”
 
mindlock: A state which occurs when one Lalloure collects another so powerfully, the personality and consciousness of the one collected is submerged. H’nons and very powerful elders are capable of mindlocking with other Lalloure but seldom use the technique.
 
mindtouch: The essence or presence of Lallourean telepathy. An individual’s mindtouch is as unique as its fingerprint or voice.
 
M’kiria H’non (mih KIR ee ah  hah NON): Lalloure at Bir Halake. The H’non who discovered M’pelanae’s Talent and trained it. M’kiria returned to its creche citadel of Iloloe in 1018 ac. after M’pelanae had completed seven years of training.
 
M’lerr (mah LER): Lalloure at Bir Halake. Head creche companion. M’lerr befriended Vilian when she came into the creche to study and encouraged Trillisay to express its feelings for her. Brown hair, hazel eyes.
 
Mohne (MOINE): Illegal human construct on Atkith designed and constructed by Bridit DuPane. Bredes’ friend and lover.
 
monosexual: A race having one sex such as the Lalloure.
 
moonmilk: An ambrosia.
 
moons: Ertaetha has two moons, Lluma and Litian. They appear in the night sky at the same time as Litian, the smaller and closest to the planet, has a faster orbit. When both are full, people show a tendency to be more sexually excitable. To be “taken on a tour of the moons” is to have a very satisfying sexual encounter. To “take oneself to the moons” is to masturbate.
 
Morwenny Derveen: Harr’s second wife who survives cascade in Cetstal.
 
moss fur: A dense furry moss that emits heat.
 
mounding: A Lallourean pleasuring for physical release, implying little affection. Also called a fleshflare, although a mounding is usually spontaneous and quickly concluded.
 
mothim: a pastel colored, broad-winged nocturnal insect with feathery antenna, similar to a moth.
 
Mozan (MOE zan): Human female, a maid in the Clouder household. Mozan was the daughter of Kemli and mother of Ashlin. Querral Clouder claimed to be the father of her child Ashlin, but this was never proven.

Nart: Human male on Atkith. One of Honee’s medsists.
 
Narrei (NAR ray): Human female, the mother of the First Lalloure.
 
N’charae (NAH char ay): Lalloure at Darclonen and Jasclarion. A cafeteria worker. N’charae later moved to Jasclarion and is the Lalloure Valonilyr mindspeaks with while it is en route to Rhil Hetre.
 
N’destalene (nah DES tah len): Lalloure at Bir Halake, one of the head keepers of the solarhouses.
 
needler: A brightbird, similar to a woodpecker, with a thin, sharp beak and long sticky tongue it uses to extract insects from crevices. Blue and lavender in color.
 
Netpinny: A village five miles west of Bir Halake where M’pelanae H’non’s parents (Darivae and Willer Hedmerk) lived for about thirty years. Peth Vinder, their housekeeper, also lives there.
 
New Talent: A Lalloure who has manifested the Talent and is in training but has not yet led its first collective. New Talents usually train for seven to ten years under a H’non and several elders.
 
nibblies: snacks.
 
NicNel (NIK nel): Human male, an artist at the Pothe studio. Greyen’s lover. About 6’2” tall with shoulder-length straight dark brown hair, blue eyes and a drooping mustache. NicNel is outrageously fey and proud of it.
 
NicNan Tutha (NIK nan  TUTH ah): Human male, Rhendilon Rt’san’s father. Also the name Rhendilon uses when masquerading as a human.
 
Nidarr (nih DAR): Human male, Vilian’s cousin.
 
Niddy: Human male on Ertaetha. Manager of the Instone Hotel who was extremely honored that Rasong, Bredes and Valonilyr spent the night at his inn.
 
nightwing: A nocturnal brightbird.
 
Niller: Human male on Atkith who befriended Rasong at Rhine’s revel and who was not adverse to sharing a ride in the thrill cradle with it.
 
Ninhue and the Night of Wings (NIN hue): A Lallourean fairy tale. Ninhue, a magical Lalloure, had hair as long as its height, jet black, which it used as wings to fly from place to place.
 
Nindirinin (NIN dih RIN in): Lalloure at Hylcyon. Nindirinin was proscribed in 818 ac. for causing the death of another Lalloure, Gaeyshen. In its thirty years living as a human outside the citadels, Nindirinin learned to weave, married and raised an adopted human child. Dark hair, green eyes.
 
Nindi Fendlin (NIN dee  FEND lin): Human name used by the Lalloure Nindirinin during its proscribement.
 
Nish: Rysille’s red and white male thorss.
 
Noenlen (NO en len): Lalloure at Bir Halake. The Administrator of Bir Halake under M’pelanae H’non, once one of M’kiria H’non’s aides. Noenlen is a reserved individual though not severe. About 400 years old, Noenlen has dark brown skin and very straight, very black hair.
 
Nordove Hills: Mountain range 125 miles north of Iloloe.
 
Northollow: Abandoned mining town in a valley in the Nordove Hills. Northollow was once prosperous but the mines on which it depended for its income were eventually mined out. Most of the town was destroyed in the spring floods of 999 ac. (MN)
 
Nothie Hambler: Owner of Hambler store and deputy in Nutermire.
 
N’sienn: Bir Halake. Head of the maintenance department.
 
nutbud: The nut of a greatree.
 
Nutermire: Village in the Aklivor Province, northeast of I’mone on the Leshac River.
 
Nyniwil (NIN ih wil): Lalloure at Bir Halake. One of Vilian’s teachers in the creche.
 
Nythniryn: Brown skinned, dark haired Lalloure from Fialonshir. One of Trellvresh’s aides. Accompanies the New Talent during the special mission to Kherlyndir farm in 1096.

Overlook: Bir Halake’s eastern courtyard which overlooks the valley and hills beyond. The entire cliff edge of Bir Halake is walled, along with the rest of the citadel, but the Overlook’s wall is low and several feet wide, comfortable and safe for sitting.

Paderbyrn (PAY der burn): Town about ten miles northwest of Darclonen. Talanae Pothe’s studio located there, Tims and Sare Brikker lived on the outskirts. An artists’ community.
 
Pahrae Y’lendro (PAH ray  yah LEN dro): Human female, the mother of the Lalloure Chentoth. Pahrae birth snatched her Loray and took it to the Nordove Hills and was pursued by Vitkynin.
 
pain-sending: Lallourean mental defense whereby an uncomfortable sensation is directed into the mind of another individual. Mild form causes confusion, medium strength causes real pain and a short, but intense headache. Forceful pain-sending will render the victim unconscious. Continued pain-sending results in swelling and bleeding of the brain, called brain burn.
 
Pandemonium Theatre: A large professional theatre in Roblin. The Pothe Studio contracts to provide sets for this theatre in the summer of 1033 ac.
 
Pani (PAN ee): Human male on Atkith. One of Rhine’s technical team. Desired Bredes.
 
partlet: A woman’s blouse without buttons which ties at the neck. It is worn open under a low cut bodice or dress to display an attractive bosom or pulled closed for warmth.
 
Pashlady: Dress shop in Grelefeld.
 
patternset: The cellular blueprint a Lalloure establishes for itself during its first amendae trance. By fixing this blueprint into its cells, a Lalloure trains its body to rejuvenate to a young, healthy ideal. Most patternsets are fixed between ages 17 and 21.
 
Pelandrilyth (PELL ann DRIH lith): M’pelanae’s ahramelen.
 
pell: A firm red or yellow fruit like a large apple.
 
Pellen Wyntir: M’pelanae’s human name, a playwright.
 
pelitate (PEL ih tate): The head of a church, a priest or minister. (GOC)
 
Periclath (PAIR ih klath): An eastern citadel.
 
Perrin (PAIR in): Male character in a play. The character C’parr portrayed when it cued Rhninen during a rehearsal.
 
Peth Vinder: Human female. The caretaker of M’pelanae H’non’s parents’ house in the village of Netpinny near Bir Halake. Peth is a widow with three children.
 
petrion (PET tree on): A clear lavender gemstone, often deeply colored, with interior coloration like an opal.
 
Phladrienne Hall (fih LAY dree an): The garden park under the central dome at Fialonshir, filled with flowers and the birds which make honey from them, honeyharts and jewelhummers.
 
Phellen Wever (FELL in  WEV er): Human male on Atkith. Honee’s son and Ashtaine’s lover.
 
pilgrimage: A Lallourean journey into the human world for the purpose of delivering Lallourean technology, philosophy and healing. Lalloure on pilgrimage travel on foot or by thorss with few provisions as they ask for their needs from the humans to whom they give service. Pilgrimages can involve up to three Lalloure, with single or double being the norm. The journeys are usually undertaken during the spring and summer months but can occur during any season, winter being the rarest. Duration is several weeks to over a year with three months the average.
 
Pirishyn H’non (PEER ih shin  hah NON): Lalloure at Fialonshir. Head of the Fialonshir Collective. Nicknamed ‘Piri.’ Blond hair and green eyes.
 
Pish: Human female on Atkith who befriended Rasong at Rhine’s revel and tried to lure it into the thrill cradle.
 
plaz, plaztin: An extremely durable plastic from the realtime universe.
 
plazroc: A durable cement from the realtime universe.
 
pleasure: Lallourean term for sex or making love.
 
pleasurie: A Lallourean sexual orgy.
 
pleasure flitting: Quick, usually anonymous moundings.
 
Plet plains: The expanse of flat terrain bordered by the Kerrakkin Mountains on the east, the Nordove Hills on the north and the D’shire Mountains on the west in northern Ertaetha.  Iloloe is located in the southern Plets.
 
Pocket Commission: A governmental agency in the realtime universe that regulates the use of pocket dimensions.
 
pocket dimension: A small, spherical universe which exists on a different plane from an infinity or realtime universe. The rate of time in a pocket dimension is usually faster than that of a realtime universe, but may be slower or the same. In addition, physical laws are often different.
 
polyplaztin: An impervious, clear plastic from the realtime universe.
 
porsleen (POUR sleen): A hard ceramic with a glassy finish often shot through with metallic threads. Porsleen is rugged and durable and used for bathroom and kitchen fixtures.
 
pourer: bartender.
 
P’porif (pah POUR if): Lalloure at Darclonen. A trouble-making elder in the Darclonen curia.
 
pr’cot (prih KOTT): A small, tart yellow fruit similar to an apricot.
 
preventative: A flowering herb the roots of which are ground, soaked and distilled to make a 99% effective female oral contraceptive. Preventative is an abortion chemical, i.e., it will bring a woman’s monthly cycle no matter if she has conceived or not. Consequently, it does not need to be taken daily, only once a month and only if one’s period is late.
 
Prin: A young man living in the forests near K’kessinair.
 
proscribement: The punishment of banishing a Lalloure from all contact with other Lalloure for a specified number of years. Proscribement is the sentence for crimes against Lalloure by Lalloure. Five years is the minimum, 100 the maximum. About a third of those proscribed never return to the citadels as they either die or suicide during their proscribements.
 
Provocateurs (pro VOCK ah tiers): A Lallourean winter holiday, 20th of Twelfth Month. A masquerade, the purpose of which is to develop new relationships.
 
Province Assembly: The central governing body of a province on Ertaetha.
 
Pryce (PRICE): Human female at the outpost. Head of the Shethlandran Company investigation.
 
Prydde (PRIDE): Town near Fialonshir citadel where L’loren and Chennen met in 16 ac. 
 
p’tandre (pah TAN dree): A traditional Lallourean dance usually performed at Spring Song and Harvest Hall. A single dancer starts with slow steps which increase in tempo with accompanying music. Other dancers join in, matching steps with the original dancer.
 
puff flower: A composite plant with a round, fluffy flower composed of many thin white, luminescent petals.
 
Q 

quartzle (KWORT zel): A common crystalline mineral occurring in numerous colors such as clear, rose, purple, blue, amber and black, used as a gemstone either faceted or uncut and polished as a cabochon. Certain types are used in making glass and abrasives.
 
Querral Clouder (KWER al  CLOW der): Human male, eldest son of Opetti and Indoft. Querral claimed to have fathered Ashlin and kidnapped the child from Nindi Fendlin.
 
Quindela (kwin DEL ah): Human female, Vilian’s maternal aunt. Nicknamed “Quinnie.” Robust woman in her fifties, brown eyes, graying hair, full bosom. Has a fondness for wine.

raddleberry: The fruit of a low, spreading shrub. Red or black in color, succulent and sweet in flavor.
 
Raeshinae: Bir Halake. Amendae monitor apprentice and Morwenny Derveen’s Lallourean relative, born in 948.
 
rainsilk: A hooded rain cloak that fastens at the shoulder.

razortails: A brightbird with a long, sharply bifurcated tail. Engages in darting, swooping courting rituals.
 
realtime: An infinity universe.

Redburd Hirlaken (red BURD  her LACK en): A first Lalloure. Founded the citadel of Bir Halake.
 
redlark: A brightbird similar to a cardinal.
 
Redlocks: A human nickname for Rhninen.
 
reflector: A device implanted in the thigh of an investigation team member. Signals are bounced off the reflector which vibrates, ascertaining that person’s position or alerting the person to contact the outpost.
 
Rhendilon Rt’san (REN dih lon  rit SOHN): Lalloure at Bir Halake, originally from Hylcyon. A sculptor who was named Artisan in 1025 ac. when it was a mere 119 years old. Kamatae to Athanen. Rasong’s first Bir Halaken lover. Resembles Rhninen, Rasong’s dead kamatae, and is indeed a distant cousin of Rhninen. Dark red hair, green eyes.
 
Rhil Hetre (RIL HET trah): A midwestern citadel on the shore of a large, fresh water lake under Jynairdileon H’non until 1040 ac., then Ishynn H’non. Rhninen once lived there. Lhro H’non’s creche citadel. Rasong, Bredes and Valonilyr lived at Rhil Hetre from 1034 to 1048 ac.
 
Rhine Stiriling Estar (RINE  STIR ill ing  ess STAR) Human male on Atkith, a wealthy singer and famous personality. Rhine was the person Rhninen reincarnated into after Rhninen died on Ertaetha. When Rasong met Rhine, he did not remember it at first, but continued contact with Rasong restored some of his memory.

rhos (ROZ): A flowering tree with fragrant, spicy blooms. Also the name of the flower of this tree.
 
rhoswater (ROZ water): A delicate, sweet perfume made from the flowers of the rhos tree.
 
rhoswood (ROZ wood: The even grained, dark hard wood of the rhos tree used for musical instruments and fine furniture.
 
Rhoz Lallan (ROZ  LAL len): The name the Lalloure Rasong uses when masquerading as a human male.
 
Rhya (RIY ah): Human female who works at the Clearinghouse in Roblin. Losellein’s mother.
 
Rih’laeneal’hir (rih LAN nel HEAR): The continuum in its whole form when infinity is circled back and coalesced into oneness. In this state all is form without substance, energy without power, life without need: universal, unconditional love. A consubstantiality. When the Rih’laeneal’hir dissolves, a continuum is formed: life, energy and matter come into existence once again and the cycle starts over.
 
ringstreet: A circular street, common to Ertaethan towns. Set up in concentric circles, large at the edge and growing smaller toward the center.
 
Rinner: The name the Lalloure Rhninen used when masquerading as a human male.
 
Rittie (RIT ee): A nightwing (nocturnal brightbird) with iridescent black and purple feathers, similar in shape and size to a swallow.
 
R’Lynlyr’Song (RAH lyn ler song): Rasong’s true name or ahramelen.
 
Roblin (ROB lin): Large town three miles west of Darclonen.
 
Roblin Royale Hotel: fancy hotel in Roblin.
 
Rodanna Alcandar (row DAN ah  al KAN der): Human female from a wealthy Roblin merchant family. A patron of the Pothe studio who pursues Greyen Kherlyndir, not knowing he is fey.
 
Room of Farewell: The Lallourean funeral room within a H’lomae. When a Lalloure dies, its body washed and wrapped loosely in white silk. For one day and one night, the body is kept in the Room of Farewell, a small silk-swathed room in the inner circle of H’lomae. Here lovers and friends come to say their good-byes and cut their lovelocks from the deceased.
 
Rosy: Orange-red female kitten Sare finds at the Felding farm.
 
Roundfire Inn: Hotel on the western mouth of the Hyldean Pass.
 
R’sille (rih SIL): Lalloure at Jasclarion. One of the charm-sick Lalloure in Sablesilk Lounge.
 
Rt’san (rit SOHN): An honorific given to those Lalloure who have been named Artisan. (See Artisan).
 
rydael (rih DAY el): A precious crystalline mineral used as a gemstone or as money in place of coin. Takes 400 years to precipitate.
 
Rysille Vilianne Jentylrs (RAH sill  vah LIE an  JEN tillers): Valonilyr’s great-great niece. Long, curly auburn hair, brown eyes, 5’3” tall. Born in Ponsilel, Ahvanine Province in 1064.

Saesi (SAY see): Human female on Ertaetha. The ill child Rasong and Valonilyr minister to.
 
saffiene (SAH feen): A precious blue gemstone similar to a sapphire.
 
Sare Klicaron Brikker (SAIR  klih KAR on  BRICK er): Human female, Bredes’ mother. Her first husband Benbe Klicaron was killed in a landslide while they were prospecting in the northern Kerrakkin Mountains and she was injured at the same time. Found by outpost field operatives, Sare was taken to the outpost by flyer but Bredes was born before they got there. She expected the Lalloure to come for her child and so did not name it until Bredes was three. Sare later married Tims Brikker and lived with him in Paderbyrn.
 
Sashaen (sah SHAY en): Lalloure at Hylcyon, Athyllin’s firstlove.
 
Sashenna Kherlyndir (sah SHEN ah  kair LIN der): Human female, Vilian’s mother.
 
scant: A Lallourean undergarment consisting of a narrow strip of silk between the legs attached to a ribbon or belt around the hips. Scants can be very simple or elaborate with embroidered and jeweled belts. The silk strip either ties or buttons to the belt in front. If a narrow ribbon is used instead of a belt, it is knitted and ties at the sides. The scant is also used as a supporter for stockings or leggings.
 
seamer: One who sews.
 
searspice: An herbal cigarette.
 
Sedence: The ceremony of passing a Lallourean Collective to a new H’non. Usually the Collective is passed by one H’non to another, though it can be passed by the curia if the resident H’non is ill, incapacitated or has died.
 
Seklaran H’non (sek LAR an  hah NON): Lalloure at Hylcyon, head of the Hylcyon Collective.
 
selfheal: Lallourean mental technique of consciously directing its body to quickly heal injuries and rid itself of infections.
 
sending: A telepathic communication between Lalloure.
 
Senenis (SEN ah niss): Lalloure at Bir Halake. An elder, amendae monitor and teacher. 300 years old.
 
Shae Dupane (SHAY  du PAIN) Human male on Atkith. Ashtaine Di’Vale’s birth name. Shae was a genetic manipulate. He was also Bridit’s and Rhine’s son, though Bridit used many other gene splicings to create him.
 
shalle (SHALL ee): Shallow snow. Spring snows or dustings that disappear quickly in the sun.
 
Shennen River (SHEN nen): A river ten miles south of Sweetwell.  Rasong was born on the Rede farm close to it.
 
shepp: A sheep-like animal which sheds its wool twice a year, making wool-gathering a legitimate occupation.
 
Shethlandran Company (sheth LAN dran): A business conglomerate in the realtime universe. The company finds, sterilizes and develops intra-dimensional worlds for specific purposes such as agriculture, mining, industry, recreation, etc.
 
sign of greeting: The gesture Lalloure and humans use to greet one another. Both hands are touched to the forehead and upper chest and then spread, palms up. A one-handed version is also acceptable but considered less formal.
 
silk lounge: A pleasuring lounge at Darclonen. All the pleasuring lounges have “silk” as part of their name such as Coralsilk, Lambsilk and Velsilk.
 
silk: The cloth made from the webs of ambri spiders. Different types of spider produce various weights of filament which are spun into thread to produce cloth from gossamer sheers to sturdy broadcloths.
 
silkit (SILK it): A breed of cat which has very long fur, four to six inches in length on its back and tail. The fur shades from light at the base to dark at the tips. Crechelle is a silkit.
 
Sislane (Rede) Gellis (SIS lane  RAY day  GEL is): Human female, Rasong’s sister. Married to Lycurn Gellis and the mother of Kundel. Sislane is a mesmerist and a devout member of the Church of the Child. Born 984 ac.
 
Sitennare H’non (SIT tin air  hah NON): Lalloure at Darclonen, circa 78 to 622 ac. One of the Lalloure who helped establish Darclonen and who became its first H’non. Sitennare was feeble and bedridden by the time Lhro manifested the Talent but it managed to train Lhro to take its place.
 
S’lirylle (SAH lur rill): Rysille’s true name or ahramelen.
 
slit: A derogatory term for a woman.
 
slitskirt: An open-sided skirt worn by Lalloure. Long or short, slitskirts often have decorated frontspieces and beads or chains which hang over the open sides. When worn as an evening garment, a scant is usually omitted.
 
Smalter: Village twenty miles west of Grelefeld. After turning in the wrong direction, M’pelanae winds up at the shabby inn there.
 
snat: An insect similar to a gnat.
 
Sohninor (SOHN nih nor): A southwestern citadel. Rhninen once lived there.
 
Sohnkivi (SOHN kiv ee): Black-haired elder at Rhil Hetre, one of Ishynn’s aides
 
solarhouse: A greenhouse.
 
Soline (so LEAN): Human female on Atkith. Rhine’s cosmetician.
 
Solsarem (sol SARE em): Lallourean summer holiday, 20th of Fifth Month. An arts, crafts and entertainment festival.
 
Song: A chimmering, a large bird-like construct. One of Rhine’s pets.
 
Sonsosari (SOHN so SARE ee): Lalloure at Darclonen. Dark hair and green eyes. A silk dyer. Quiet demeanor.
 
Sorlie: A pourer and sometime clover at the Hig Whistle.
 
sparklewing: An insect with rainbow colored, iridescent wings.
 
S’pethin (sah PETH in): Lalloure at Darclonen. Tall, muscular.
 
S’preah: Loray born to the Whittier family in 1094. Gwenlilli meets it at the Fialonshir Courtesy in 1096.
 
spicenuts: Any kind of nut with spice(s) added.
 
spicepine: Soft wood pine tree. All parts of the tree are aromatic—the broad needles, bark, wood and seeds—and are used for perfumes and seasonings.
 
spider pearl: The nacreous remains of a pearl spider’s nest. Pearl spiders are found in caves and rock crevices. Once the spiders’ nests have been abandoned, they are gathered, polished and worn as jewelry. The pearls can be both round and oval shaped.
 
splash: A public bath. In a Lallourean citadel, a lounge containing heated, tile-lined pools for bathing and socializing.
 
splinter grass: A very stiff, tall grass. Used for brushes and brooms.
 
spokestreet: Straight streets in an Ertaethan town which lead like the spokes of a wheel from the outermost ringstreet into a central plaza at the center of the town.
 
Spring Mingle: A large dinner and dance held in Grelefeld in mid Fifth Month.
 
Spring Song: Lallourean spring holiday, first of Fourth Month. Begins the planting season.
 
S’sananen (sah SAH nay en): Lalloure at Bir Halake, the head livestocker.
 
Starshine: Rysille’s black and white female cat.
 
stetsteel: A strong, impervious metal from realtime.
 
stick: A derogatory term for a man.
 
stitcher: A sewing machine.
 
stone dove: A large dove-like bird, creamy, blue green and lavender in color which nests in rocky outcroppings.
 
Styrrie Birer (STEAR ee  BUY er): Human female on Atkith. Manager of a sounds store. Kolt’s girlfriend. Black curly hair, bald on top, bosomy.
 
Sunlin: A planet in realtime where Meriel’s family lives.
 
Sutker’s Smithy: Blacksmith shop in Cottclif.
 
sweetmint: A delicately sweet, minty herb, reminiscent of peppermint.
 
sweetsoap: A soft, citrus-smelling soap.
 
sweetstar: A yellow citrus fruit, oblong with six indentations along its length. When cut widthwise, sections look like stars.
 
Sweetwell: Small town about twenty-five miles east of Darclonen. Rasong was born near it and Wellowen was born there.
 
Syloran (sih LORE an): Amendae monitor at Darclonen. Reddish blond (copper) hair, brown eyes.
 
Syndre (SIN dree): Lalloure at Jasclarion. A supervisor in the glass shops.
 
synthecloth (SINTH ee kloth): A synthetic fabric from realtime.
 
T 

Taarae River (TAAR ray): River which flows east to west out of the Kerrakkin Mountains and forms part of the boundary between the Bir Halake and Iloloe Provinces.
 
Taarington (TAAR ing ton): A large town on the Taarae River which boast a prestigious university. Sislane Rede went there to study in 1003 ac. when she was 19.
 
Taarington College: One of the largest, oldest colleges on Ertaetha, located in the city of Tarrington.
 
Taine: Rhine’s pet name for Ashtaine.
 
Talanae Pothe (TAL ah nay  POTH): Human female from Paderbyrn, owner and resident artist of the Pothe studio. Talanae is bisexual, and lives with her female lover, Mindri. Nicknamed “Tally,” she is outspoken, talented and practical.
 
Talent, the: The Lallourean ability to collect hundreds of Lallourean minds and unite them to a single purpose. Those possessing the Talent are given the honorific H’non after they complete training and lead their first collective. All Lalloure possess some degree of the Talent, i.e., all Lalloure can collect several minds together during pleasuring or when distance sending is required. The average Lalloure can collect two or three other minds with its own.
 
Tannie: Owner of a bakery in Cottclif.
 
T’caryn (tah KAR in): Lalloure at Bir Halake, a young creche companion.
 
teakip: A small rectangular or circular building in the forests or gardens of a citadel, beautifully appointed and furnished with pillows, pallets, a small table and tea service. Used by the Lalloure for pleasuring or socializing.
 
tech: A technician.
 
Teminin (TAY mih nin): Lalloure at Rhil Hetre. The head pithrie planter.
 
Ten Quadrant Federation: An alliance of planets in the realtime universe.
 
Ternede Rt’san (ter NAY dah  rit SOHN): Lalloure at Darclonen, the Artisan who painted the portrait of Rhninen holding the linder which hangs in Rasong’s room. Dark brown hair, dark eyes.
 
Teseran (TESS er an): Lalloure, one of Ishynn H’non’s aides. Tall, pale blond, ice blue eyes. Diffident and standoffish.
 
Teshlyon (TESH lie on): Lalloure at Bir Halake. An amendae monitor, counselor and leatherworker. Teshlyon befriended Vilian and she learned to trust it with her problems. About 280 years old, sandy hair, blue eyes.
 
Tesleksett (tes LEK set): An abandoned citadel in the far south of Ertaetha, at the base of the Kerrakkin Mountains near the edge of the swamps. Established in 75 ac., dissolved in 127 ac. Tesleksett never attracted enough Lalloure to function to full capacity and had intrinsic physical layout problems which, without technology, were difficult to overcome (flooding, air conditioning).
 
T’Eslor (tah ES lore): Lalloure at Jasclarion. One of Heseth H’non’s lovers.
 
Thollana (thol LAN ah): Lalloure at Darclonen. One of Lhro H’non’s aides and an elder. Brown hair streaked with white, brown eyes.
 
thorss (THORS): A farm animal with a prehensile trunk. Horse-like but more muscular with heavier shoulders and legs and cloven hooves. Used as a draft animal and for transportation, either ridden or hitched. Has a high spatial sense.
 
Thienne: red-headed woman, leader of the Roblin chapter of Reunify.
 
Thiryn (THIR in): Lalloure at Darclonen. One of Jovizher H’non’s aides.
 
Throne, the: M’pelanae H’non’s huge, ornate pleasuring couch in Glaceglitter Hall. To be pleasured by M’pelanae on the Throne is considered a humorous “honor.” A trapdoor under the Throne leads to the circuits and a vestibule behind it leads to M’pelanae’s bedroom. M’pelanae designed the Throne after seeing the altar in the nearby Church of the Child.
 
Thyler (THI ler): Greyen’s long time companion after NicNel. Dark skin, eyes and hair.
 
Tieblin and Karkol Heztet (TEA blin and KAR kol  HEZ tet): Mayor of Grelefeld and her husband.
 
Tifee (tih FEE): Human female on Atkith. One of Shinshininear’s overseers. Rhine’s and Chasily’s aunt.
 
tikilpips (TIK el pips): Small, bunchy flowers like babiesbreath but with tiny lavender and pale blue blooms.
 
tillands: air flowers (tillandsia) with long petals that change color with the seasons.
 
timekeeper: A twenty-four hour clock with one hand which marks time in hourly segments. The face has no numbers but is designated midday (12 noon), even or evening (6 p.m.), midnight (12 a.m.) and dawn (6 a.m.).
 
Tinghe (TING gah): Lalloure at Darclonen, one of Rhninen’s original devotees.
 
tipple: Fruit juice.
 
Titikit (TIH tih kit): Lalloure at Rhil Hetre. Lover of Valonilyr.
 
T’loram (tah LOR am): The generic Lallourean “god” worshipped by the Church of the Child. The name T’loram is derived from L’loren, the first Lalloure. However, by the time the religion became organized in the late first century, L’loren’s name was improperly remembered.
 
T’Ondar (tah ON dar): Lalloure at K’kessinair, a crechemate of Rhninen’s.
 
Tonsoria: beauty or barber shop.
 
Trave Sutker: Co-owner of Sutker’s Smithy in Cottclif with his parents Keel and Vennie. Older brother of Keese and Kile. Age 34.
 
Trellvresh (TREL vresh): Lalloure at Fialonshir. New Talent, manifests 1091. Visits Kherlyndir farm as representative of Pirishyn H’non in 1096. Hip length wavy golden blond hair, green eyes.

Triesher Rede (TREE shir  RAY day): Human male, Rasong’s father. A prosperous farmer in the eastern part of the Darclonen Province.  Died in 1001 ac. when Rasong was twenty.
 
Trillisay (TRIL lih say): Lalloure at Bir Halake. Born 1017 ac., Trillisay was still in the creche when Vilian went there to study. Trillisay was immediately charmed by Vilian but tried to deny it. When the Loray accepted its feelings, it asked Vilian to be its firstlove and she consented. Dark straight hair, thick curling eyebrows, smoldering brown eyes.
 
Trinka: A female clover at the Hig Whistle.
 
Trisen (TRIH sen): A piebald thorss at Jasclarion.
 
T’rothwin (tah ROTH win): Lalloure at Aklivor. One of Vitkynin’s kamataes. T’rothwin, a young elder of only 350, died of grief when its other kamatae, Gicheni, died of old age.
 
tuber: A root vegetable, similar to a potato.
 
twinklewing: An active brightbird similar to a goldfinch with bright yellow and blue feathers. “Fluttery as a twinklewing.”
 
Twishwell Bank: Largest bank in Roblin, Darclonen Province. Owned and managed by Aga Twishwell.
 
Tyazza Eti (tih AZ ah  ET ee): Human female, a pelitate in the Church of the Child, Periclath Province.
 
Tykate (TIE kate): Human male on Atkith. Chasily’s assistant who helps Rasong dress one morning. Oriental-looking with dark hair and epicanthic eyefolds. Rasong does not recognize his ethnic type.
 
Tims Brikker (TIMS  BRICK er): Human male, a field operative from the outpost, Bredes’ foster father. Tims was one of the operatives who took Bredes to Jasclarion and who kept in contact with Bredes and collected the Lalloure’s reports for the Company and the Commission. Tims married Bredes’ mother Sare and lived near Bredes with her in Paderbyrn.

Undafal (UN dah fall): Town in northern Ertaetha on the western side of the Ladiwynd Pass.
 
Uesvyn (YOU sih vin): Lalloure at Iloloe. One of the three elders who accompany Bredes to Bir Halake.
 
V 

Valonilyr (vah LON ih lir): Vilian’s Lallourean name. M’pelanae H’non created this moniker from the name of an abandoned citadel in the Kerrakkin Mountains, V’Onalyrin. (See Vilian Kherlyndir.)
 
Vaeshel’Rilyr (vay SHELL rih lir): Vilian’s ahramelen or true name, and the one the Aklakvala uses when addressing her.
 
Velsilk Lounge: The largest lounge in Darclonen used for holiday pleasuries.
 
Vhimwil (VIM will): Human male, circa fifth century. A religious zealot in the Church of the Child who claimed to have spoken to manifestations of T’loram over a period of years. His book, Visions of Light, is not taken seriously by the Church.
 
vlotze (VLOT zah): Heavy wet snow. Extreme vlotze snowfalls cave in roofs and break tree branches.
 
Vilian Kherlyndir (vah LIE an  kair LIN der): MAIN CHARACTER. See Character Protraits page.
 
Viller Kherl: Valonilyr’s human male alias.
 
Vitkynin (vit KIN in): Lalloure at Iloloe. The young elder who guardianed Chentoth of Aklivor. Through the years Vitkynin was guardian, creche companion, firstlove and kamatae to Chentoth. (See Chentoth.)
 
V’Onalyrin (vah ON ah LIR in): An abandoned citadel in the Kerrakkin Mountains between Rhil Hetre and Darclonen. Lansitin H’non diffracted there in 180 ac. and the citadel was dissolved in 181 ac. after Lansitin died. There was a shortage of H’nons at that time, barely enough to tend the other fourteen citadels so the Lalloure of V’Onalyrin were absorbed into other citadels. (See Lansitin H’non.)

Vrilli (VRIL ee): Lalloure at Darclonen. The head planter.
 
V’ryrhi (vih REAR ee): Lalloure at Bir Halake. A metal fabricator in the laboratories and one of Bredes’ lovers.

waistlet: A wide belt, often quite elaborate.
 
warrel (WOR el): A large, rich brown edible mushroom.
 
Webbyn Sound: The large ocean inlet between the Fialonshir and Periclath provinces.
 
Weekly Press, The: Weekly newspaper published in Grelefeld.
 
Wellowen (WEL low wen): Loray at Darclonen. The Loray born in Sweetwell. Blond, blue eyes.
 
Whent Aditly Kuenhaf (WENT  ah DIT lee  KU en hoff): The name Ashtaine Di’Vale’s adoptive parents gave him and the one Ashtaine decided to use after Rhine purchased ‘Ashtaine Di’Vale’ for Rasong.
 
Whitter: Family outside Cottclif who birthed a Loray in 1094. Farm an orchard.
 
Willer Hedmerk (WIL er  HEAD merk): Human male, M’pelanae’s father.
 
Wilovin (wil LOW vin): Lalloure at K’kessinair. A crechemate of Rhninen’s. Later became the H’non of Lallalennen.
 
Winth: Human male on Atkith. One of Shinshininear’s overseers. Rhine’s and Chasily’s uncle.
 
wirewing: An insect with sharp-edged oval wings similar in shape to a dragonfly.
 
wishling: A weeping tree, similar to a willow which spreads in width as well as growing in height. Also the pale lavender and pink flowers of this tree.
 
wolsilk: A sturdy cloth woven as a twill and in various basket weave patterns and composed of a silk and wool mixture. Darclonen’s main product sold at the Clearinghouse.
 
wyldgrass (WILD gras): Plains grasses of various kinds, common all over Ertaetha.
 
Wylinae (WHY lih nay Lalloure at Bir Halake, one of M’pelanae’s circle of lovers. A librarian who later became one of M’pelanae’s aides.

Yari (YAR ee): Human male who was fascinated by Bredes at the outpost and conducted his own, unauthorized investigation into Bredes’ sexuality.
 
yearling: A Loray who has reached one year of age.

Zrehchek (zah RAH chek): Lalloure at Bir Halake, an elder and creche companion.
